FAQs

  • As someone who has taught editing for 20 years, I had a pretty good handle on what works in a classroom. And no one needs another software manual. I also noticed that my own students would read books on certain topics but never on software. What I felt I needed in my classes was a process-oriented book on editing. Something that addressed workflow and how you find and talk to collaborators like musicians. I also wanted to feature a wider variety of voices and career specialties than I normally find in editing books.

This book was created to address these things. I also created a searchable YouTube channel of the interviews, knowing that in a film classroom sometimes a quick video is much more effective than reading something.

  • I thought about the types of careers that many of the filmmakers and editors I know personally have, and what types of people are featured in some of the existing textbooks. I wanted to add some new voices and experiences and expand the type of interviews that are commonly portrayed in texts for classroom use. I started searching on social media and through my own network for people I felt were exemplary in some way, and also looked for people who were active in helping the film industry. People who lead and participate in organizations, who create pathways for emerging filmmakers. Then I just reached out them! Luckily, everyone said yes right away. Allie even brought in an alumni from her program, to add to the diversity of experience level.
